Founded in 1930, EAE-ANV was the first Basque nationalist political party running on a socialist program. On 16 September 2008, the party was outlawed by the Spanish Supreme Court based on ties with qA HREF="es}pv.html#eta">ETA. The Spanish ruling was appealed to the European Court of Human Rights, which, after reviewing the question, upheld the Spanish courts on the matter.

The relative position of inscriptions may vary, although it is usually "EAE" at the hoist and "ANV" at the fly, and the typeface differs sometimes, usually in case of less usual relative position. Not only the inscriptions, but also the form of the lauburu, as well as the proprtions, may vary, the star is rarely fimbriated and colors are those of the Basque ethnic/regional flag.
